The Kirby Derby

As soon as our first 5K was over in November, we comitted to Monticello's Kirby Derby. I decided to do a 5K and Brian decided to try the 10K. It's been great training and we've both done well however Bri suffered an injury to his IT band two weeks ago and hasn't been able to run. That meant that he never finished his training and had never run more than 4. 8 miles. He was nervous this morning and up very early stretching and doing all he could to emotionally prepare for the longest race he'd ever done.

The kids wanted to stretch while we waited for our neighbors to come over and babysit at 7:15 this morning so stretch we did! So cute and supportive were they.

off we go!
The kids parked themselves in front of the neighbors and watched as all the racers went by.
Hundreds and Hundreds of people participated...that's our neighbor D in the blue shirt and blue shorts.
Brian passes by!
That's me in the gray shirt and blue arm band.
Yup, that's a runner dressed up as a bottle of beer- everyone loved him!
D on his way back -he had the 2nd best run of his life...21.5 minutes for a 5K...almost 7 minute miles!!! Unbelieveable.
Brian flashed "I love you" to the kids as he passes by and takes the long route on the 10K.
Mara, Alyssa, Katlyn, and Alaric take it all in.
Me, barely making it but still loving it.
In the end, it was amazing. I finished in 29 minutes and 59 seconds...far exceeding my goal and my best time ever.
Brian FINISHED ( his only goal for the day) and did so in 47 minutes and 50 seconds ( 8 minute miles)
Brian did so well, he placed 3rd for his age range!
On to the next...Brian will bike 46 miles tomorrow morning for the Lions Club and he'll do it without our cheerleading squad since we'll be at my brother's graduation. Less than a month before his Ride for MS in mid- June. We'll pick another race this summer, perhaps the Komen Race in Chicago in the fall and our last race in late November. Loving it!
